About Cat Saunders, Ph.D.
Cat Saunders, Ph.D., has been involved in the fields of psychology, self-help, and interdisciplinary healing since the early 1970s.
At that time, she began studying a wide array of bodywork and breathing techniques, therapeutic methodologies, cross-cultural spiritual disciplines, and creative modalities, including art therapy and ecstatic dance. Over time, she integrated these diverse experiences into her private practice as a consultant, shamanic practitioner, and nonsectarian minister.
Dr. Cat's doctoral research focused on the relationship between functional neurology and eating disorders. She has been interviewed on radio and television regarding her practice, her techniques for working with anger, and her series of articles about death.
Dr. Cat is the author of Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook: A Compassionate Guide for Being Human. She is also the author of more than 200 published articles and interviews.
From a series of 1300 daily drawings completed in 1983-1987, she created a deck of 64 healing images, published in June 2007. The deck is called “Shadow and Light: Images for Women in Recovery.” The cover drawing for Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook comes from this deck.
Beginning in 1985, Dr. Cat has maintained a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she has worked with individuals, couples, families, and small businesses.
As of January 2025, Cat does consultation and mentoring work by phone with people worldwide. She no longer does “regular” counseling. Feel free to email Dr. Cat if you’d like more clarification about this distinction.
